Description
San Galgano Abbey (Abbazia di San Galgano) is located about 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of Siena, near the border with the province of Grosseto and two small villages Monticiano and Chiusdino. This is the area of Val di Merse, densely populated, rich in churches and castles, villages, convents and monasteries also known for its unspoiled nature and the pristine beauty of Tuscan hills and valleys.
What Makes It Special
The Abbey of San Galgano is one of the places of main attraction in Tuscany. Its pure Gothic style, frescoes on the monastery walls made by the great painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti, intertwining true story and the legends - make the place unique and worth of visiting. Some people say that the tale of sword stuck in the rock could have been brought by French Cistercian monks from Tuscany to France and became one of the key elements of King Arthur's saga. (The sword in the stone, which is in the Chapel of Monte Siepi, has been thought a fake, but in 2001 the Siena University researched the relic and came to the conclusion that the sword is 12th century authentic.)
