Description
The Calanais or the Callanish Stones, are located near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland. There are 13 stones (11 feet or 3.5 metes high) which form a circle around a knife like central monolith about 15.5 feet tall (4.75 meters). A long alley of stones leads to the north, and shorter stone rows run to the east, south, and west. Pottery found on the site shows that the stones were erected approximately at 2200 BC.
What Makes It Special
The aura of enchantment, mystery and marvel surrounds the stones of Calanais. Recent excavations show that the site was not constructed in the wilderness but in the middle of fertile area, surrounded by homes and farms. The mystery remains regarding the goal that builders pursued in erecting the stones. Was it a calendar? A temple? A burial site? This question is still not answered. Directions To Destination
