General Information
Description

Ġgantija (English 'Giants' Tower') is a megalith (made of large stones) temple complex on the Mediterranean island of Gozo near Xaghra village. Gozo is a small island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of the Southern European country of Malta; after the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. The Ġgantija temples stand at the end of the Xaghra plateau, facing the south-east. The monument consists of two temples, built next to each other with shared court and surrounded by 17 feet wall. In addition to being the oldest, the Gjantija temples are the most intact shrine complexes on Malta. The two temples cover a total of 10,000 square feet.

What Makes It Special

The oldest man made, free-standing structure in the world. The Ġgantija temples are the earliest of a series of megalithic temples in Malta. They were constructed during the Neolithic Age (3600-2500 BC), which makes these temples more than 5500 years old and one of the oldest sacred religious places. Legend has it that a mythical giantess brought 20 feet (6 meters) megaliths on her head while holding her child in her hands.
