Description
Atitlán is a fresh water lake in the Guatemalan Highlands surrounded by three volcanoes which shape the lake. Lake Atitlán is about 31 miles (50 km) west-northwest of Antigua. What Makes It Special
The lake is overwhelmingly picturesque and quiet. It may be compared with the Lake Como in Italy by its beauty and with three volcanoes added make Lake Atitlánt even more beautiful, as wrote Aldous Huxley. It is surrounded by many Maya villages, in which people speak their ancestors languages and follows their traditions and beliefs. The Atitlán Butterfly Sanctuary, sheltering over 35 species of butterflies and Bird Refuge with more than 720 bird species is a part of Nature Reserve of San Buenaventura. Useful Visitor Information and Tips
The best time to go from November to April. Allocate about four days to enjoy sightseeing, swimming and boating which is best in the morning with the water absolutely calm.
