The Lake of Heaven, or in Tibetean Namtso, is located 149 miles (240 km) north of capital Lhasa in Tibet, its length is 43 miles (70 km) and a width of 18.5 miles (30 km), and it covers an area of 749 sq.miles (1,940 square km). It is the largest high altitude (15,479 feet) salt lake in Tibet and the second of this kind in China. What Makes It Special
The Lake of Haven (In Tibetan, Namtso or Namtso Chumo) is one of the five most beautiful lakes in China. It is considered one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. Namtso is famous for its high altitude (15,479 feet (about 4720 meters)) and vast area (about 757 square miles (1961 square kilometers), its purity, solemnness and beautiful scenery. it is the highest altitude saltwater lake in the world with five island and five peninsulas. The level of the lake maintained by rainfall and melted snow from mountains. Besides the beautiful scenery, it is also a famous sacred Buddhist place. There is a Zhaxi Temple at the largest peninsula on the lake Zhaxi. In every Tibetan year of sheep, thousands of Buddhist monks come to the Lake of Heaven and Zhaxi Temple to worship. As a rule, they will walk clockwise along the Namtso Lake in order to receive the blessing of the gods. Useful Visitor Information and Tips
The best time to visit May to September. To get to the place you can hire a taxi or a mini bus from Lhasa. You need plenty of warm clothing (in July night temperatures fall below freezing).
