Description

Mondello is a small town and resort near the city of Palermo (about 10 km / 5.5 miles west) on the island and autonomous region of Sicily in Southern Italy. This tiny seaside town used to be a fishing village. Not anymore - the fishing industry disappeared long ago giving way to tourism and everything else that comes with it. Indeed, Mondello with its golden sand beaches located on shores of a nicely curved cozy bay with clear turquoise water is an ideal place to relax, enjoy the sea, surfing, sailing and Sicilian cuisine.

The Mondello and it beach lies between two cliffs, Monte Capo Gallo and Monte Pellegrino. The slopes of Capo Gallo are a nature reserve that can be accessed by foot from Mondello. Monte Pellegrino, where bones of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo, were discovered, is a special place for many Palermitani for whom Catholicism is still very significant. According to the legend, St Rosalia lived as a hermit in a cave on Mount Pellegrino. In 1624 when a plague haunted Palermo, she appeared to several people and ordered him to bring her bones to Palermo. When this happened and her remains were carried in procession through the city, the plague ceased.

Mondello is essentially a suburb of Palermo, rather large Italian city (population more than 650 thousand). It was founded in 736 BC and has a reach history. Weekend visits to Mondello are quite popular for Palermitani who often spend their holidays there.
