Description

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is located near the town of Zipaquirá Cundinamarca Department, Colombia. It is an underground Roman Catholic church built in a salt mine 656 feet (200 m) underground in a Halite(rock salt) mountain at the altitude of 8700 feet (2652 m). The place is 30 miles (49 km) north of Bogota, the capital of Colombia, and is a part of the complex consisting of Salt Park (Parque de la Sal) and Museum of Mining.

The Cathedral is a working church with 3,000 believers coming every Sunday and a very popular in Colombia place of pilgrimage. It has no official status as a cathedral in the Catholic Church. During Easter there can be up to 10,000 people attending the mass.

The church which started as a small underground sanctuary carved in a salt rock by miners for their daily prayers. Today, it is an enormous temple - 393 feet (120 m) in length and 72 feet (22 m) height. The total surface of the sanctuary is 59201ft² (5500 m²).

The Salt Cathedral is just a part of a huge mining complex 91,493 sq ft (8500 sq m) which is still functioning. Salt has been mined in the Zipaquirá mountains since pre-Columbian times about 2000 years ago. The pre-Hispanic Muisca people were the first to mine for salt, using it as currency.

What Makes It Special

About 656 feet (200 m) deep within a salt mountain 45 minutes from Bogotá, The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Catedral de Sal) takes you into the heart of an engineering marvel—a mountain, turned salt mine, turned cathedral and museum.

Located inside the salt mines of Zipaquirá in the Bogotá´s Savannah it is a religious center and one of the most famous Catholic sanctuaries of the country and the first wonder of Colombia. Inside, there are natural wonders - the moist salt walls and dripping stalactite ceilings - and rich artistic collections, especially the salt and marble sculptures on religious themes. The subterranean church forms part of cultural complex and is called a jewel of Colombian architecture.

The Cathedral has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. There are icons, ornaments, columns and other architectural details hand carved in the salt rock and accented by blue lightings. The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is thought to represent one of the most remarkable achievements of the Colombian architecture.
