I could never suspect that one day I would write about a department store as if it were a museum or a historic landmark. Yet, here we are - allow me to present you Harrods, a luxury department store located on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London, UK established in 1834. By American standards, Harrods is not that big. It has over one million square feet (90,000 sq m) of selling space in over 330 departments (see our side bar below with some trivia regarding world's largest stores and malls). But for Europe, it is huge.

No doubt, Buckingham Palace is one of the most interesting things in London to explore. State rooms, Royal Mews, The Queen's Gallery are usual tourist destinations. However, just walking around Buckingham Palace and Its Garden can be as interesting as visiting places mentioned above. Walking tours give a chance to get familiar with real life and its pulse with streets, people, buildings, parks, traffic, restaurants and bars, shops and their windows... You walk at your own pace observing and watching things that you will miss in museums and formal exhibitions. So, why not to spend several hours and explore what's outside Buckingham Palace - it's free, and you are not constrained by Buckingham Palace's rules and schedule.

The Old Bank of England, although it looks from inside like a traditional London pub, in reality is almost a newcomer - it was opened in 1995. However, this traditional feel and look is not accidental. It is located in a building where The Bank of England had been trading for 87 years, until 1975. When the bank branch closed its doors, after a series of deal, almost 20 years later, the lease was acquired in 1994 by London brewers, Fuller, Smith and Turner Plc. which had big plans for the prime location of the building. What used to be the Law Courts' branch of The Bank of England is now The Old Bank of England pub.

For those looking just for a pint (or more) of ale, The Grenadier, a tiny pub in London (United Kingdom) near to Belgrave Square and Hyde Park Corner, is not the place "to strive, to seek, to find." Same way, even if the food offered at this pub is good, I would not spend much effort to go there just to taste it. However, if you are searching for something exceptional and remarkable in English character and history, the pub can be very well what you would like to see and experience.

I am offering you a glimpse of Piccadilly, a major London street, running from Hyde Park Corner in the west to Piccadilly Circus in the east (located very close to Charing Cross). Actually, my small gallery and blurb covers only small area on Piccadilly closer to Piccadilly Circus. As the focal point of the gallery, I selected Fortnum & Mason, a famous department store and Royal Warrant holder. But I will also show some other places of interest you can see and visit in this area.

London is a very big city, and even its one street such is Piccadilly with adjacent area of St. James's have so many places to see and visit that a whole guide book can be written with lists of museums, shops and restaurants to visit. Elegant and expensive, right at the heart of London, this area can offer a lot. Below is just a humble attempt to give you an idea of what to see, where to go, and what to expect.

It seems like every big European city has a restaurant (or bar, or cafe, etc.) called "Dolce Vita." Well, true or not, there is one in London, UK. One of the pluses of this restaurant is its location - between Harrods and Harvey Nichols. By the way, this area is also a place where many high fashion stores (for example, on and off Sloane Avenue). So, if you are ready to drop after shopping and want to have a lunch, consider Dolce Vita - a small restaurant claiming to deliver a traditional Italian cuisine.
