Frederick, MD, Useful Information
I recommend visiting Frederick on Saturday - the day when most interesting events take place and the best time to enjoy the Downtown Frederick.
Frederick is located less
than one hour drive from Washington, D.C., Baltimore. Use Route I-270 North
from Washington, D.C. to Frederick (45 miles) or Route I-70 West from Baltimore
(46 miles).
Frederick is not far from
such historic places as Harpers Ferry, WV, Gettysburg, PA.
Greyhound Bus has a
terminal in downtown Frederick.
Visit the website of the Tourism Council of
Frederick County for the calendar of events and other useful information
regarding Frederick.
If you want to use car to
come Frederick, do it. Traffic is low on weekends and it is easy to find a
place to park your car in downtown.
Many outsiders would tell you that there is nothing special about Frederick - a city in west-central Maryland, United States (also the county seat of Frederick County). Yet, if you have a day, I would recommend without hesitation to spend it in Frederick - a place where history and modern life intertwined into a lovely and vibrant community to enjoy and understand.
Let me tell you upfront - there are no glamorous monuments or world fame museums in Frederick. And the city itself is not that big by any standards. According to 2008 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, its population was slightly more than 59,000. It is true that Frederick has a rich historic past serving as a major crossroads from colonial times. Because of this, the town turned out to be at the center of the Maryland campaigns of the Civil War, during which both Union and Confederate troops marched through Frederick. But in the city itself, there are no significant landmarks in the city itself that relate to the Civil War. Why then it's worth visiting Frederick?
If you want to spent some time in a relaxed and friendly place, if you want a opportunity to get familiar with a small American city and enjoy the simplicity of life in an outlying community, go to Frederick, and you will not regret it. Its downtown and historic district will present you with variety of shopping, dining, entertainment, and public art experiences. Far from hustle of major cities, yet full of life and colors - choose a sunny Saturday in summer, have a stroll, look around, find a place to eat, relish local culinary delights and people surrounding you. And the savor and the charm of a traditional place like Frederick may very well be what you need to escape from your usual get-up-and-go life.
Below is a photo gallery dedicated to Frederick to help you understand better what this city can offer to a visitor. The gallery focuses on Downtown Frederick. Its Market Street as well as other adjacent areas are the heart of it. It is not a comprehensive guide; I give you mostly hectic selection of images - almost like imprints on my conciseness while I was talking my time that day in the city.
