Trail blazing marks
Simple tips for simple hikes:
- Hike in groups as much as possible, especially during winter and on hazardous terrain.
- Leave your itinerary with a friend or family member and check in with them upon your return.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Things commonly recommended to have while hiking are map(s), compass/GPS, sunglasses, sunscreen, extra food and water, extra clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, fire starter, matches and knife.
- Use multiple layers of clothing keep them warm in winter and from overheating in summer. Cotton is not recommended for strenuous activities because it soaks up moisture.
- Carry a hat for added warmth or protection from the sun.
- Exchange greetings with groups of hikers you meet.
- Allow sufficient space between you and the hiker in front of you to avoid braches of trees snapping back in your face.
- Do not trespass private property, stay on marked trails.
- Learn simple marks used in trail blazing.
- Stay quiet and respect other hikers' enjoyment of the nature.
- Encourage the slowest hiker to take the lead of the group with everyone matching this speed.
- Hikers moving uphill have usually the right-of-way.
- For every 1,000 feet of elevation, the temperature often drops three to five degrees.
- If you are lost, stop, think, observe and plan (S.T.O.P). Most important, don't panic.
