in Marigot.

Sint Maarten, the Dutch side, is known for its festive nightlife, beaches, jewelry, exotic drinks made with native rum-based guavaberry liquors, and plentiful casinos, while Saint-Martin, the French side, is known more for its nude beaches, clothes, shopping, and rich French and Indian Caribbean cuisine. Patty, one of our contributors, recently visited the island with her two sons Matt and Nathan - here is her photo story about this adventure.

Margot is the capital of St. Martin (French side). It sits in a harbor. It offers an upscale mall for cruise tourists.

Beach front at Sunterra Oceanfront at the resort

Beach front at the Flamingo Sunterra Resort located directly on the beach of beautiful Simpson Bay. The water has a temperature similar to bath water and guests can spend all day at the waterfront. The tiki huts provide protection from the sun. Some guests venture out early just to save their place. The ship stayed in the water al all times. The silhouette in the background is the island Saba.

Hermit Crab Races Hermits Crabs racing out of the
circle

Sunterra Resort offers hermit crab races. These are not your typical hermit crabs. They grow much larger in St. Maartens. The crabs are dropped in the middle of the large circle. As the crowd cheers them on, the first crab to get to the outer circle wins. The lucky person who selected the crab gets $10 gift certificate to the resort restaurant.

The studio kitchen The studio kitchen, another view

This is a typical one bedroom studio at the Flamingo Sunterra that offers privately owned, time-share condominium rentals for travelers ($195 to $235 per night, double occupancy). Here is the kitchen which offers all the amenities you need. A nice view of the king bed with the comfortable sitting area which includes the sleeper sofa.

There is the requisite shower to remove sand before going inside.
